Shaping our Future

Exciting improvements are underway to ensure we can continue to provide the very best care, now and for years to come.

We’re delighted to share that we have begun our transformation programme, Shaping Our Future. Over the next year, we’ll be refurbishing our Pembury Hospice and expanding services at our hospice in Five Ashes.

These changes are essential to safeguarding our future, improving the experience for everyone who needs us, and ensuring our buildings remain fit for purpose for the decades ahead.

What this means for our community

The very best care environments

Improved spaces — including our in‑patient ward, reception area, spiritual care, Living Well Centre, counselling rooms, and outpatient clinic spaces — will offer calm, modern, uplifting environments designed around comfort, privacy, and dignity.

Flexible, personalised care

Bringing these services together on the refurbished ground floor will allow us to offer more flexible approaches to care. It means we can better support what matters to each person, whether that’s a quiet space for reflection, a seamless transition between appointments, or a welcoming environment for families and carers.

Continued individualised care

Your care continues uninterrupted. Some services will temporarily relocate while work is underway, but all remain available.

A hospice that can support more people

By improving our facilities and reducing long‑term running costs, we will be able to meet the needs of more adults in our community, now and into the future.

Why we’re refurbishing now

A ward no longer fit for purpose

Our in‑patient ward at Pembury has served our community for many years, but it is now in need of significant repair and modernisation. Some parts have remain unchanged since we opened in 1998. The layout, infrastructure, and facilities no longer meet the standards we believe people deserve at the end of life. By refurbishing now and doing so comprehensively, we are creating a calm, modern, uplifting environment that truly meets the needs of patients, families, and those providing care.

Everyone’s end of life should be supported with dignity, comfort, and the highest quality surroundings. This refurbishment ensures exactly that.

A best‑value approach that protects our future

Carrying out these works in one coordinated programme is the most cost‑effective option. By investing now, we avoid the higher costs of repeated repairs, emergency fixes, and further disruption in the years ahead. This approach safeguards our future and ensures we can continue offering outstanding care without escalating maintenance costs.

Reducing our running costs through sustainability

You may have noticed new solar panels at Pembury. These are part of our long‑term plan to reduce energy costs and our reliance on the current energy system. The installation was partially funded through a government capital grant, helping us make a smart investment that will reduce our bills and support our environmental commitments.

How we are funding the refurbishment

This work is being paid for through designated funds that we have built up over several years, specifically for capital improvements, thanks to the support of our generous community. These funds aren’t for day‑to‑day running costs. Using them allows us to secure the future of our hospice buildings without affecting the care we provide today.
