What Christmas Means to Our Living Well Community

Christmas at Hospice in the Weald isn’t defined by the rush of shopping or the pressure to celebrate. Instead, it’s shaped by the families receiving care and support, the staff and volunteers, and the wider community who share in special moments across the festive season.

With the big day approaching, we spoke with people who attend Living Well to discover what Christmas means to them, as they sat down in moments of reflection to write their thoughts in our Christmas cards. Read on to learn more…

The gift of kindness

Brenda shared that for her, the meaning of Christmas is rooted in more than gifts and celebration, but rather, these statements: “Family is the real meaning of Christmas. The support hospice care gives us. The birth of Christ.”

Kindness forms the foundation of hospice care, including small gestures, catering to what matters to each individual, and the presence of people who listen, help, and hold space for joy and sadness alike. Jacki offered this simple but powerful reminder: “For me, Christmas isn’t about presents… It’s about being kind to people.

Niki echoed this sense of compassion, reflecting on how the season can feel different for everyone. “Christmas is about giving, not receiving. It’s important to be mindful that it is not a joyful time for all, and to show kindness to strangers.

At Hospice in the Weald, we understand that Christmas is not a happy time for everyone, and that for many, it can amplify grief and uncertainty. That’s why, our staff and volunteers strive to bring comfort to those who need it, whether they choose to celebrate Christmas or not.

Time with loved ones

For Louisa, the meaning of Christmas can be summed up in six words: “To spend time with my family.” It’s a sentiment shared by many, and one of the reasons hospice care is so important, particularly at this time of year. At the Hospice, we get into the Christmas spirit by enabling families to be together, share memories, and make new ones, even in difficult circumstances.

Natalie, a Living Well Assistant, concluded, offering a perspective that reflects the spirit of our community. “Christmas means being together with those you love and spreading a bit of joy. This is reflected in our support to patients and carers in Living Well, especially at our Christmas party.

At the Hospice, the holiday season is not centred on grand celebrations, but on kindness, understanding, moments of joy, and individual needs. These people tell a story of what Christmas looks like at Hospice in the Weald, reminding us that at its core, this period is about being present, thoughtful, and together, particularly for those who have been bereaved.
