Supporters blaze a trail at our Firewalk

Our courageous supporters faced their fears to step bare-foot over burning embers at the Hospice’s new Firewalk fundraiser on Saturday 14th March.

Hosted at The Camden Arms pub in Pembury, the ‘hottest’ event of the year saw the community pull together to raise more than £10,000 for Hospice in the Weald.

Many of those who took part did so to pay tribute to loved ones cared for by the Hospice, including Jemma Maddock from Tunbridge Wells, who with her dad Peter, sister Tara, and family friends were there in memory of her mum Julie.

Jemma said: “The Firewalk was an epic experience for a brilliant cause! It was a special night to do it as it’s Mother’s Day tomorrow. It’s our first one without our mum and we weren’t sure how we were going to deal with it, but this gave us focus and it has helped us to keep her memory alive.

“We wanted to do it for our special Mum because she had such amazing care. Mum was treated with such compassion, and we also received outstanding care, as her family. She was such a proud woman, and they made everything so much better for her. I will never forget it. We have raised just under £1,700 and are still counting.”

Katie Greywood, the Hospice’s Director of Income Generation, said: “What an incredible event it was! It was amazing to see everybody put their fears aside and take on this incredible challenge for Hospice in the Weald at this well-loved pub, just a stone’s throw from the Hospice in Pembury.”

Explaining the vital need for fundraising, Katie added: “So far, the Firewalk has raised more than £10,000. This contributes to the £25,000 we need to raise every single day of the year to make sure we can be there for everybody who needs us. That’s to support inpatient care, to support people in their own homes, to provide counselling and Living Well services and to be there for children and young people. Thank you so much to everyone who took part and to all those in the community who supported the event.”
