Molly and Rebecca shared their memories of stepfather and partner, Gerry, who died under the care of Hospice in the Weald eight years ago. Molly is taking on the eight-mile route at Moonlight Walk this month to mark the anniversary.
Gerry was a father figure to Molly, playing a huge role in her life; shaping her hobbies and supporting her. “He took me under his wing when I first met him when I was four, about four,” she said. “He stepped in and was the dad I didn’t have basically.”
The moment hospice care was first introduced, and the impact it had, is something Rebecca remembers well. “A fantastic consultant came in and said, ‘I’m going to ring the Hospice.’ And from that moment on, I felt like I was met with a big hug. And we had the support and the help from the team.”
For Rebecca, losing her partner meant dealing with the very real effects of grief. “Going through grief can be very, very isolating if you’ve lost the person that you would normally turn to when you feel that awful,” she shared. “You just feel, you know, just feel very, very alone.”
Moonlight Walk holds a special place for the pair, who took part for the first time shortly after Gerry’s death. “We saw Moonlight Walk advertised and we decided to do it, and it was such a good experience to be able to be surrounded by other people who’ve gone through what we’ve gone through and all just be happy and enjoying life,” said Molly.
“There are many people cheering you on, stops along the way and strawberries and cream, or whatever they’re they’ve got planned, and music and fun,” Rebecca added. “Yeah, it’s a great evening.”
