Judith Young is taking part in Hospice Run for the first time this year, running in memory of her niece, Hélène. During her illness, Hélène was cared for with great compassion by our nursing and medical teams. Judith says taking part in Hospice Run is her way of carrying Hélène’s legacy forward, celebrating the love they shared and the care that supported their family when they needed it most.
“Hélène had complex needs, following treatment for breast cancer over the last ten years. The cancer had spread to her brain causing seizures, confusion, and the loss of the use of her legs. She benefited from expert medical care and compassionate personal care throughout her stay at Hospice in the Weald and was hardly ever in pain or distress. She received physiotherapy which enabled her to walk again.”
“Hélène was very determined to live for as long and as well as she could. Her husband, children, wider family and friends were involved in many social events; every aspect of her life was supported and nurtured. Everyone was welcome to visit the hospice at any time. Her sister filled Hélène’s room with photographs, books and treats, and when her dad visited her from France he brought her favourite things, including saucisson and champagne. As well as spending time in her room together there were lots of areas for us to gather away from the room, including the lovely garden.”
“Hospice in the Weald is a very special place. Within the building, there is laughter and a celebration of life. Every second of life is valued and treated with dignity and respect. Nothing was ever too much trouble for the staff, who I came to regard as real-life angels.
On one of my last visits to see Hélène, it was sunny for the first time that spring. Hélène was wheeled on her bed to the patio area where, as she felt the sun on her face, she was happy. We listened to the birdsong. Life, in all its stages, was worth living.”
“This September Hélène would have celebrated her 43rd birthday and taking part in the Hospice Run will be a way for me to celebrate her and carry her spirit into the future. I hope I may see some familiar faces, staff and members of other families that I got to know.
My training has been tougher than I expected due to the heat. I started running when I retired and I am always motivated to go out. We live near to the Wensum Valley outside Norwich and I am very lucky to have a disused railway line to jog along. I have never been a fast runner but I can plod for a decent stretch.
It’s vital to support the Hospice; it’s the least I can do. I know there are many volunteers who give up their time to raise funds and who regularly help Hospice in the Weald. The essential services provided have to be funded somehow. Although Hospice in the Weald isn’t local for us, friends have sponsored me very generously. The biggest money-spinner so far was a yoga friends’ tea party. We raised £175, which was amazing, had a lovely afternoon and luckily had leftovers!
I wish everyone running, walking or supporting all the very best on 20th September.”
