“I make a special point of noting all the suggestions and getting them into the song somewhere,” he says. “I make sure all contributions are included.”
The result is a song that reflects many different perspectives. There is no single message or theme beyond life itself and what it means to each individual.
“It’s just life,” Simon says. “Someone came up with the idea and it’s what life means to them. One person came up with ‘life’s a b****’, which is understandable, so you include that.”
For Simon, being part of the group is both rewarding and inspiring.
“It can be discussing your favourite song, discussing lyrics, a song that means something and why it means something,” Simon explains. “We have people with lovely voices, so we usually sing a song anyway.”
Rather than following a strict plan, each session is shaped by the people who attend.
“There is no pre-formed idea behind each session. It’s anything to do with music and why it’s important.”
Importantly, the group is open to everyone, regardless of musical ability.
“Oh, I love the song,” Jacki says. “I kept singing it the other day and drove him [my husband] potty. I’ve got several songs that Simon’s done that I keep singing. It’s so pretty, it’s so quick and meaningful. It’s nice.”
That lasting connection is perhaps the greatest achievement of the Music Expression group. Through shared creativity, conversation and music, people come together to tell their stories and create something meaningful, one word at a time.
As Life demonstrates, every voice matters, and every contribution helps create something special.
