Volunteering in a charity shop is a simple act with a big heart. Every hour you give helps raise vital funds for hospice care, turns pre‑loved items into support for local families, and connects you to a warm community of people who care. If you’ve been wondering why to volunteer at a charity shop or exactly what a volunteer does in a charity shop, this guide will walk you through the benefits, the roles available, and how to volunteer at a charity shop with Hospice in the Weald.
People volunteer for many reasons, but common threads run through every story: community, purpose and connection. In our shops, volunteers tell us they find friendship, confidence and a renewed sense of routine. They learn new skills, pass on their experience, and see the impact of their time right there on the shop floor. These are the everyday, life‑giving benefits of volunteering in a charity shop – feeling useful, valued and part of something that matters.
If you’re returning to work, changing careers or simply looking to meet people, shop volunteering can be a gentle, confidence‑building step. You’ll gain customer‑service experience, learn retail systems and discover your strengths, all while supporting local hospice care.
For more real stories and reflections, meet some of our charity shop volunteers.
No two shifts are the same, and there’s a role for every comfort level. Shifts are usually two to four hours and are always supported by the shop team.
These are typical charity shop volunteer duties, but we’ll match tasks to your interests and confidence. If you love books, you could help with sorting; if you enjoy conversation, you might thrive out front.
Volunteering is a two‑way exchange. You’ll bring your life experience, and you’ll gain practical skills from volunteering in a charity shop:
These skills transfer well to retail, hospitality and office roles – and they look great on a CV. Just as importantly, you’ll discover what you enjoy and where you shine.
Age requirements can vary by shop and role. At the Hospice in the Weald shops, we welcome adult volunteers from age 18 upwards. Other charities offer supported opportunities for young people (for example, through Duke of Edinburgh) with parental consent and school agreement. If you are unsure, the best first step is to speak with your local charity shop; they’ll explain what’s possible and how supervision works.
Ongoing support and training. From till training to Gift Aid prompts and visual merchandising tips, we’ll make sure you feel comfortable and confident.
Every item you help sort and every conversation at the till helps fund compassionate care for people with a life‑limiting illness and for the families who love them. Hospice care is provided at no cost to patients and families; our shops play a vital role in making that possible. When you volunteer, you help keep that promise.
If you’d like to discover volunteering at a charity shop first‑hand, we’d love to hear from you. Register your interest via volunteer in our shops and take the first step. You can also explore day‑to‑day experiences of other volunteers in our meet our charity shop volunteers page. We’ll match your time and interests to a welcoming team, provide the training you need, and make sure you feel part of something special.
Thank you for considering sharing your time with Hospice in the Weald – your generosity makes a real, local difference!
Q: What does training look like?
You’ll have a friendly induction, on‑the‑job guidance, and short, practical training for tills and Gift Aid prompts.
Q: What if I’ve never worked in retail?
That’s absolutely fine. We’ll teach you what you need to know, step by step.
Q: What if I can’t stand for long, or prefer quieter roles?
We can adapt tasks – seated sorting, book pricing, steaming – so you can volunteer comfortably.
Q: What about expenses?
We’ll explain our policy on reasonable out‑of‑pocket expenses (for example, local travel) when you join.
Q: Can I volunteer with a friend?
Yes – many people do. Let us know, and we’ll try to place you together.
