Currently more people in the UK choose cremation rather than burial, there may be many different reasons to choose one over the other. Direct cremations have increased especially during the COVID pandemic due to restrictions on people attending funerals.
You may have access to a family plot in your local church, and unless the churchyard is closed by Order in Council under the Burial Act of 1853 the following people have a right to be buried in your churchyard, residents in your parish, those whose names are on the church electoral roll and those dying in your parish
Although most burials take place in purpose built or managed churchyards, there is no law against burial on private land. But this does need to be thought through carefully, there are a number of rules and regulations that need to be adhered to.
