Sam was just 38 when she died in August 2023 at Hospice in the Weald. She had a vibrant personality, loved her family, and lived life to the full. Here, her mum, Debbie, shares her story, explaining why she’ll be taking part in Moonlight Walk, alongside friends and family…
Sam was full of life. She was energetic, bubbly and fiercely family focused. From planning days out with her parents and sister, to securing tickets to music concerts, Sam was always thinking ahead, always taking care of the people she loved. When Debbie, Steve and Darren take to the streets this summer for Moonlight Walk, they’ll be doing so with stars on their t-shirts, leopard print in their outfits, and Sam in their hearts.
Sam met Darren in 2006 through her job at Tonbridge train station. Darren was a train driver, and their paths crossed just like the train tracks at the station; from then on, they started their journey together. Sam adored being a mum to her two daughters, Layla, 14, and Aubrey, 7. Even her love of cars didn’t take a back seat — though she was dismayed when the baby seat didn’t quite suit the aesthetic of her sleek soft-top with her own number plate, a gift from her parents.
“Sam was so caring,” says Debbie. “She looked after everyone around her. She made sure holidays were booked, outings were planned, and nobody missed out. She was always in control – in the best way.”
Sam’s connection to the Hospice began before her illness, when her uncle spent his final weeks there. Initially hesitant to visit, Sam was reassured by the compassionate care he received and soon became an active supporter, rallying her family to take part in the Starlight Stroll, and hosting craft fairs at places like Scotney Castle to raise funds.
In late 2022, Sam began to feel unwell. After several hospital visits, she received the devastating diagnosis of stage 4 cancer. During treatment, she often stayed with Debbie, watching game shows like The 1% Club with her girls and enjoying breakfast in bed. “It sometimes got very competitive!” Debbie laughs.
When the time came, Sam chose to spend her final days at the Hospice. Darren remembers how hard it was to bring her in by ambulance, but the care they received once there made all the difference.
Julie from the Living Well team spent hours making plaster casts with the girls, helping them create lasting memories while giving Darren space to be with Sam. One of their fondest memories is sitting around Sam’s bed listening to her sing along to Michael Bolton, especially ‘How Am I Supposed to Live Without You.’ Just days later, Sam died peacefully at the Hospice, surrounded by those who loved her.
“Living without Sam is incredibly difficult,” Darren says. “But we still raise a glass of Strawberry Daiquiri — her favourite — and I’ve even learned to shop the VIP slots in the Next sale. She used to hate my clothes, so she threw out my whole wardrobe once!”
Debbie now volunteers in one of the Hospice shops and runs her own Christmas craft markets in Sam’s memory. One of Sam’s best friends, Corinne, now works on the Hospice ward. “We always had a laugh,” she says. “Music gigs, caravan trips to Camber, or milkshakes at Broadview Garden Centre — we packed a lot into our time. She was the best mum.”
This summer, Debbie, Steve, Darren, Corinne and Sam’s many friends and family will take part once again in the Moonlight Walk, as ‘Sam’s Striking Stars’ — named for the tattoo of three stars on Sam’s foot and the bright light she was in all their lives.
“We’ll be back in our leopard print tutus – Sam’s favourite – and we’ll walk with pride,” says Debbie. “It’s a fun and special way to remember her.”
