Our Response to the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee ‘Financial sustainability of adult hospices in England’ report

Hospices across the country are under growing financial pressure, with the cost of providing care rising faster than the funding available to support it. Charitable hospices like ours receive only part of their funding from government sources, so many are now facing difficult choices about beds, community services and specialist support at a time when demand is increasing.

The Public Accounts Committee has recognised these challenges and has called for urgent national action to protect access to high quality end of life care. We strongly welcome these recommendations. Sustainable, long term funding has been delayed for too many years, and clarity and stability are now essential for our sector.

Most people would prefer to be cared for at home or in a hospice, and doing so also benefits the wider health system by reducing pressure on hospitals. With the right national support and direction through the upcoming Modern Service Framework, hospices can continue to play an essential role in ensuring people receive the care they want and deserve at the end of life.

At Hospice in the Weald, we are working towards this future. Through our Shaping Our Future programme and planned improvements at our Pembury and Five Ashes sites, we are investing in the environments, services and expertise needed to deliver outstanding care for many years to come.

As our Chief Executive, Nick Farthing, explains, “the current funding model is no longer sustainable and an urgent review is needed so that no one’s care is limited by where they live or by financial pressure. Everyone deserves dignity, choice and expert support at the end of life.

We remain optimistic, and the support of our community continues to make all the difference. Whether through donations, events, gifts in wills, volunteering, supporting our shops or involving your workplace, every action creates meaningful impact.”
