Norman has supported Hospice in the Weald for a couple of years through our lottery and retail shops. When it came to writing his Will, he wanted to leave a gift to a local charity – and choosing the Hospice helps him to remember his loved ones and protect the future of hospice care. Below, Norman kindly shares his story…
“It was a good six to nine months after Marie – my wife – died, that, I thought, it’s time to rehome her clothes. She had lovely clothes as we had just been on a cruise before she died, so I looked around and I saw your name, Hospice in the Weald.
I came down to the Hospice in Pembury and asked if it would be possible that I can donate her clothes, but I didn’t want to see them anywhere in Crowborough as a reminder, and Hospice in the Weald gave me a 100% guarantee that I wouldn’t, and I didn’t; that built my trust with this amazing charity. We were always very interested in charities locally, me and Marie.”
“She was thoughtful and a very caring lady, so I wanted to help a charity in Marie’s memory.”
“Marie had a thing called Myotonic Dystrophy, a muscle wasting disease. I became her carer in 1987. We joined a nationwide group, and I became a contact point for the Southeast – for people to find out information from, as we always wanted to help. Unfortunately, we lost a child, who only lived a day – so I always knew I wanted to do something to help children in Marie’s name, and so it’s important to me that you not only support adults but children, too.”
“After Marie died I felt I lost the will to live but a companionship with a friend of ours, Tina, developed into a relationship; it saved me, she brought me back and gave me a reason to live. Unfortunately, Tina was a very unwell lady and died in 2024, so not only is the gift in memory of Marie but also Tina, they were both such lovely ladies.
Leaving a legacy will hopefully do some good, I’m not a wealthy person but the fact I can actually give something back in my name as well as Marie and Tina’s means a lot.”
“It means at the end of someone’s life, to give them dignity and a good last bit of life. There’s so much more to the Hospice than people think. I’m sad to say I never knew about the Hospice before Marie died but now is my opportunity to share why it is important to support, because it is a wonderful organisation and you never know if you’ll ever need it yourself. Writing a Will was very easy, I wrote a professional one with local solicitors, but there are lots of different ways to write one.”
