Meadow of Memories stuns at Scotney Castle

Hospice in the Weald’s stunning display of 450 handcrafted butterflies has been created in the beautiful grounds of the National Trust’s Scotney Castle, as part of our Meadow of Memories appeal launched this spring.

Each of the steel butterflies has been dedicated in memory of a loved one, acting as a lasting tribute of love and remembrance for our supporters.

Overlooking the medieval moated castle in Lamberhurst, Tunbridge Wells, until 26th May, the temporary installation offers a place of reflection for all visitors, whether they have dedicated a butterfly or not.

Sarah Bowes, Head of Public Fundraising at Hospice in the Weald, said: “We are honoured to launch the Hospice’s new remembrance display at the National Trust’s Scotney Castle. As a cherished local landmark, it offers the perfect setting to pause, remember, and find comfort in shared tribute.

“As a powerful symbol of change and renewal, the butterfly sculptures have resonated with our dedicated supporters whose loved ones were cared for by the Hospice. Thanks to their support, we have, so far, raised more than £29,000 through the Meadow of Memories. Every penny will go towards making a difference to adults and children facing life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses when it matters most.”

Laura Edwards, the National Trust’s Visitor Operations and Experience Manager at Scotney Castle has first-hand experience of the specialist care and support the Hospice offers families. Her father, Terry, was cared for by the Hospice in 2021.

“Everyone at Scotney Castle feels privileged to host the Hospice’s new Meadow of Memories, and for me it’s an amazing opportunity to bring the two parts of my world together,” said Laura.

“The care that the Hospice’s team gave to my dad, and our whole family, was nothing short of phenomenal. We knew there was an in-patient ward but had no idea of the breadth of free support available. Thanks to the Hospice, my mum and I could stay with my dad and be a family right until the end. We have dedicated a butterfly in memory of my dad, and I am so proud to be involved with this initiative.”

Supporters who have dedicated a butterfly will attend a special remembrance ceremony at Scotney Castle on 26th May. Afterwards, they will receive their butterflies as a lasting tribute to their loved ones.
