Mayor of Tonbridge and Malling nominates Hospice in the Weald

The new Mayor of Tonbridge and Malling, Councillor Chris Brown, was warmly welcomed by staff during a visit to the Hospice in Pembury. Cllr Brown, who has chosen Hospice in the Weald as one of his nominated charities during his mayoral year, was given a tour of the in-patient ward, Living Well centre and Hospice gardens on 15th July.

He was impressed to learn about the breadth of free care and support the Hospice offers, from watercolour classes to symptom management and counselling services. He also heard about plans to refurbish the Hospice, built in 1998, which will see the ward, Living Well centre and other areas modernised to create a light, warm and welcoming environment for all. An award-winning design team, Elaine Lewis Designs and KKE Architects, has been appointed and staff, volunteers, patients and families are helping to inspire and inform the plans.

Cllr Brown said: “It was a pleasure to meet everyone at Hospice in the Weald today. I chose to support the Hospice as one of my mayoral charities, as I was aware of their incredible work and have friends who received excellent care here. It wasn’t until my visit today, however, that I came to learn about the breadth of support available for adults and children at all stages of illness in my borough, and across west Kent and East Sussex. I look forward to supporting Hospice in the Weald so that many others can benefit from their wonderful care.”

Sarah Bowes, Head of Public Fundraising at the Hospice, said: “We were all delighted to meet Cllr Brown and would like to thank him for choosing to support Hospice in the Weald during his mayoral year. We already have some exciting events planned and look forward to Cllr Brown’s support to raise funds and awareness in the coming year.”

During his time as Mayor, Cllr Brown’s chosen charities are Hospice in the Weald and the British Heart Foundation. Cllr Brown will be supported by Deputy Mayor Cllr Kim Tanner.
