Joy and smiles at our Children's Christmas party

The Pembury Hospice was filled with festive cheer on 6th December, as 12 families attended our Christmas party for children and young people! Expertly planned by our children’s team, the event offered families a chance to celebrate the holiday season in an accessible environment, considering wheelchair access, changing facilities and dietary requirements.

Festive activities

A variety of activities were on offer, including wreathmaking, festive playdough, creating Christmas decorations, making reindeer food, and an area for quiet sensory play. Nick Farthing, CEO at Hospice in the Weald, got involved, making a craft Christmas tree with Ori, whose brother, Kit, is supported by Hospice in the Weald for Children.

All activities considered the needs of the children, catered for a range of ages, and most importantly, brought countless smiles throughout the event. The party was also popular with parents and carers, who could socialise, relax, and meet new people, knowing that their children were well looked after and having plenty of festive fun.

Sophie, who attended with her five-year-old son, Harrison, shared: “We love the Christmas party, it’s an opportunity to get together once a year and see other families that are supported by the Hospice and catch up with them. This is our third Christmas party since the service began and each year they get better and better.

“My son enjoys it and as a parent of a child who has extra needs, it’s just really nice to come to a safe place for them and be able to relax, knowing that there’s lots of people there that know him and his needs.”

A joyful time

Darshika, whose son, Madhi, is visited at home, experienced our Christmas party for the first time with her family, and added: “This is Madhi’s first Christmas event, he’s really enjoying it, they’ve done it really nicely here with all the activities. My other two kids that came are loving it, it’s amazing. The children’s team come and spend some time with Madhi, they play with him which he really enjoys, they bring a lot of toys.”

Amongst various opportunities for play, children also enjoyed a pantomime with Embracing Arts, beautiful face painting, and live Christmas music, which brought the most joy of all!

The children loved meeting Santa, and all received Christmas presents, kindly paid for by Tonbridge Lions, whose president, Phil Jeeson, attended the event. Tonbridge Lions also covered the cost of the pantomime, which was an instant hit with children and parents alike. “The Hospice puts on some wonderful events, especially at Christmas, Santa turns up, everybody’s happy and it’s a great atmosphere. The team visit and they entertain not only Maisie but her siblings as well, it gives Jessica a break, so that she can get on with what she needs to do. They’ve been a godsend to her,” said Karen, grandparent of Maise, who is cared for by the children’s team.

Invaluable support

Charlotte, whose two-year-old son, Oliver, also receives support, added: “Oliver’s had the time of his life at the Christmas party. He’s been making reindeer food for us to take home and leave out for Rudolf on Christmas Eve. He’s met Father Christmas and given him a high-five.

“The Hospice helps us in so many ways, they provide respite sessions for me and Oliver in our home. The bring a whole big bag of fun things for him to do, there is messy play, painting. He loves all of that.

“They bring musical instruments, his favourite books and they just completely entertain him and make him laugh for a good few hours so that I’m able to go and have a cup of tea in peace.”

Jess, Children’s Healthcare Assistant, concluded: “This was our biggest and busiest event to date. As always, the team pulled together to create a magical ‘North Pole Experience’ for the families we support.”

Thank you to all the families who attended; bringing joy, especially at this time of year, is something that is important to all at Hospice in the Weald. We’d also like to extend our thank you to the Tonbridge Lions and to Compaid, who provided transport for two families, enabling them to join us on this wonderful day.
