Hospice in the Weald is pleased to hear it will be receiving a further £155,000 from the government’s renewed capital funding for hospices, but is urging for longer-term, sustainable investment for the sector.
The Department of Health and Social Care has announced which hospices, including Hospice in the Weald, are to benefit from an additional £25m investment in its capital funding scheme.
Nick Farthing, Chief Executive of Hospice in the Weald, said: “We are grateful to be receiving a further £155,000 as part of the government’s extended capital funding programme. It takes the total we have received from the scheme over the past two years to £950,000, enabling us to improve our facilities and environment for patients and families.
“We recognise the importance of capital investment, having made recent upgrades to our hospice in Five Ashes, East Sussex and will be using this latest funding to support the major refurbishment currently underway at our hospice in Pembury, Kent to benefit patients now and in the future.
“However, this funding is ringfenced for capital projects such as buildings and infrastructure, meaning it cannot be used to support day‑to‑day patient care or staffing. Like almost every UK hospice, it costs more to run Hospice in the Weald than the money we bring in through fundraising, retail and the government combined – and being in deficit is not sustainable forever.
“It is therefore vital that the government puts plans in place for the sector to ensure long-term, sustainable funding for the essential care and support all hospices provide.
“In the meantime, we are hugely grateful to our community, whose generosity helps us raise £9 million each year so that we can continue to provide free care for adults and children when they need us most.”
