Ben’s dad was cared for at Hospice in the Weald before he died. He valued hard work, loved his family, and enjoyed looking after their home and garden. Here, Ben shares how the whole family could spend quality time together in his dad’s final weeks, his drive to fundraise, and why he’ll be participating in Hospice Run…
Dad wasn’t very frivolous, and he wasn’t in any way materialistic. His passion was looking after the family, and he would have done anything for Mum and for us. He got so much pleasure out of doing things for us rather than himself. All his time and effort were put into the house and garden together with spending time with his family.
He worked from a young age and would work throughout the day as a car salesman and then as a DJ by night. He married Mum in 1986 after approaching her as a bet in a nightclub! They were happily married for 37 years before Dad passed away in 2023.
I was twelve when he started working at a small village garage in Ticehurst and he worked there right up until he became ill in the January. The really sad thing is that he had worked so hard for all his life and then passed away virtually at the point of retirement.
Once Dad was transferred to the Hospice, we had a really positive experience. Mum was quite overwhelmed with everyone visiting him at home and you could see that she was more comfortable in the Hospice with friends and family popping in whenever they wanted to.
He had a lovely room overlooking the garden and I stayed with him for a couple of nights where I was able to sign into my Netflix account and he could watch his favourite programs. Dad spent a couple of weeks in the Hospice, and we were there every day with him.
Dad had been unwell and was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on 21st January 2023 and was told that it had also spread which meant that chemotherapy was not an option. He was unwell before but from the point of diagnosis, there was a very rapid decline, and he was keen to go to the Hospice because it was local to us, and we knew all about it.
I had planned to do the Brighton Marathon in April 2023 before Dad became ill. I told him in May 2022 that I was doing it, not realising that he wouldn’t be around to watch it and cheer me on. When he died in the February, I decided to raise funds for the Hospice to show my family’s appreciation of their support.
I then signed up to do the London Marathon with #TeamWeald in 2024 and the day of the marathon fell on what would have been Dad’s 69th birthday which was great and I knew that he would be there me spurring me on. It was tough but nothing compared to what Dad had gone through and how brave he was despite the pain he was in.
My girlfriend and I did the half marathon at Hospice Run in 2024. It’s a really nice run to do, the atmosphere keeps you going through a lot of it and the environment is very pretty. A stream train went by when we went ran past High Rocks which was lovely. Even if it a really hot day, there are plenty of trees to keep you cool. We have signed up to do it again this year because I want to keep Dad’s memory alive and I recognise the work that the Hospice continues to do.
