When Chris lost his fiancée Fran to bowel cancer in July 2021, everything changed.
Fran was just in her early thirties. Brave, she was always hopeful and determined she would get better right until the end. During those long months of illness, much of it during Covid restrictions, walking outdoors became his headspace, an escape, a way of holding on to each other when life felt impossibly heavy.
The Hospice in the Weald became a lifeline. A place where difficult conversations were held gently, where nurses understood, truly understood, the depth of what they were facing: Chris said, “It was a place where I could be Fran’s fiancé rather than her carer”, “I didn’t have to explain her complications and medication they just knew. Although the look on their faces when they saw how young Fran was, I will always remember”
“One of Fran’s gifts to me was her family “and being at the Hospice in many ways gifted Chris back to himself too, allowing experienced nurses to care for Fran and understand Fran’s complications.
And when Fran died, the Hospice didn’t stop caring. “I am so glad I have started bereavement counselling before Fran passed so I could unload in a way that I couldn’t in front of Fran and her family”
Providing physical, medical and emotional support through our services, the Hospice provides care completely free of charge to patients with a life limiting illness and their loved ones. A Journey Toward Healing
In the rawness that followed Fran’s death, Chris joined the Hospice Run very quickly following the loss of Fran. He was exhausted, angry, emotional, and yet it helped start his grieving process. Fundraising felt natural. Giving back felt right.
Whilst training for a Kilimanjaro trek with MacMillan, in memory of Fran, there was an opportunity to join the Camino trek for Hospice in the Weald with both being charities so close to Chris’s heart.
“I was nervous to join the group, not the trek but the group environment, I was the only male in the group and was apprehensive about meeting people who had also suffered loss. I was conscious I had lost Fran who was so young, whereas other groups I had been to were full of people who had lost partners who were mainly older and usually were male partners. But the pre-meet helped break the ice, and having the group WhatsApp eased the fear, getting the conversation out there early”
Chris found that on the actual trek he could share parts of Fran’s story, parts of his own, and still retreat into silence when he needed space. Nature did what nature always seems to do, heal. Chris said “Walking in a group of people who had a common theme didn’t define us; but it allowed us to be open and honest about our feelings and broke down boundaries early”
Those days became part of Chris’s journey forward. Part of rebuilding a life he never expected to live without Fran. Part of realising that he wasn’t alone and didn’t have to pretend to be strong.Today, Chris gives back however he can and champions the hospice that supported him, Fran, and her family so profoundly.
Chris said “It doesn’t end when someone passes away, moving forward after that with the Hospice’s help has been extremely important to me, and I know it’s what Fran wanted”
His message to anyone considering the next challenge, the Sahara?
“Life doesn’t always work out the way you think it will. If there’s something you want to do, don’t wait.” Chris
