There are many options open to people
offering their services to work in the Hospice. Basically
these fall into two categories, working directly with
patients and families or working with members of staff
in support services. Support services include working
in the various offices where you may be involved in
fundraising, education, finance, information technology,
secretarial, building maintenance, administration, gardening,
driving, or domestic services and catering.
Some
volunteers are able to use their skills acquired in
connection with their chosen careers whilst others
elect to follow a totally different path. Whatever
the choice we will make sure you are well prepared
for your work by offering an induction programme and
continual support and training.
Here
are a few of the options available:

Homecare
Sitting in the patient's home thus relieving the carer.
Reception
Staffing the front desk for four hours shifts between
8.30 a.m. and 8.30 p.m.
Car
Drivers
Ferrying mobile patients to and from the Hospice.
Gardening
in the Hospice garden
Entirely staffed by volunteers under the management
of a volunteer to give pleasure to the patients.
Offices
You might be counting money, desk top publishing or
data entry, or providing secretarial support. Could
involve varying levels of IT skills.
Day
Therapy Centre
Helping to look after patients who come to spend the
day at the Hospice, or providing support for one of
the complementary therapies provided at the Centre.
Coffee Bar
Offering refreshments to visitors and taking the trolley
round the In-patient Unit

Complementary
therapies
Giving treatment to patients and relatives. At
present we offer reflexology, aromatherapy, massage
and relaxation. |
Occupational
therapies
Supporting our art, craft and musical activities.
In
patient unit
Working in the office as a ward clerk, or performing
general duties for patients and staff.
Flowers
Ensuring the flower displays around the Hospice are
always fresh and attractive
Maintenance
Helping maintain the fabric of the Hospice building
or our Charity Shops.
Bereavement
Counsellors
You will undergo professional training at the Hospice
which will enable you to help and comfort the bereaved
families. You will receive supervision and support
as required.
