Join us for a very special event to mark the start of the Christmas season.

'Carols at Christmas' will be held in Tunbridge Wells' historic Church of King Charles the Martyr and hosted by journalist, broadcaster and writer Sian Williams.  Organised by Hospice volunteers, the event will be attended by the Mayor of Tunbridge Wells and the Bishop of Rochester.  The programme features performances by, among others:

  • The Royal Tunbridge Wells Orpheus Male Voice Choir
  • A quartet comprised of musicians from the Tonbridge Philharmonic Orchestra
  • The Senior Chamber Choir of Tunbridge Wells Girls Grammar School

Music will be interspersed with readings and conversations between Sian Williams and people connected with the Hospice.

The event starts at 6.30pm and will be followed, at approximately 7.45pm, by refreshments in the church hall.  Seating is unreserved and the doors will open at 6pm.

Tickets (includes refreshments):  Adults £15, Children (16 years and under) £7.50.  All proceeds to Hospice in the Weald.

About the performers:

The Royal Tunbridge Wells Orpheus Male Voice Choir has been performing for 79 years for churches, local & national charities and businesses to help with fundraising projects and to entertain customers.  It performs the year round and has sung in many major venues including the Albert Hall, Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, and Rochester Cathedral.  For two years running it won a Heart of the Community Award. With a library of over 500 pieces, its repertoire is extremely wide and a typical concert will include folk songs, blues, classical and pop favourites, hymns and show music.  The choir has raised many tens if not hundreds of thousands of pounds for charities over the years, and in doing so has provided challenge, reward and comradeship for many generations of men in the Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge areas. Led by Musical Director Richard Walshaw and Accompanist Adam Crane, the choir invariably delights its audiences with its four part harmonies and the power and sensitivity of its performances. You can read more about the choir and its future programme on www.rtworpheusmvc.org  Follow us on Twitter @TWMaleVoiceChr

The quartet comprises the following members of the Tonbridge Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO): Susan Skone James (TPO leader) and Caroline Walshaw (violins), Kit Denny (viola) and Danny Kingshill (TPO principal cellist). TPO has established a growing reputation as one of the foremost amateur orchestras in Kent, and performs five concerts each season (including some with its sister choir) under the inspirational baton of Matthew Willis, Tonbridge Philharmonic Society’s Music Director. Currently, TPO is preparing for its performance on 17 February 2018 of Shostakovich’s 7th Symphony (‘Leningrad’) – a challenging and poignant piece rarely performed by amateur orchestras.  Please visit www.tonphil.org.uk for further details.

The Senior Chamber Choir of Tunbridge Wells Girls Grammar School is a group of sixth form students who perform a broad range of sacred and secular music.  From accompanying mass in St Mark's Venice over the summer, to jazzed up A Capella performances, the girls enjoy performing a broad and challenging repertoire.
