Volunteer With Us FAQS
Q. Who can Volunteer?
Anyone over the age of 16! You just need some spare time and the energy and enthusiasm to get involved.
Q. Where are Volunteer roles based?
We have 29 shops throughout our catchment area in West Kent and northern East Sussex, and roles are available at all of them. We also have many roles based at the hospice in Pembury, close to Tunbridge Wells. For some volunteer roles it may be possible to work from home. But if you are helping out at events or acting as an ambassador for the hospice, you would visit a variety of different locations. We are set to open our fist Cottage Hospice in Five Ashes in 2017 - there will be many new volunteer roles based here.
Q. What Volunteer roles are available?
We always have a huge number of different roles available but we might not have thought of everything! If you have specialist skills or interests we can often find a way to use them.
Q. Do you pay travel expenses?
Yes, we currently pay 45p per mile for volunteers to travel from home to their place of volunteering. You may not wish to claim these expenses, or you can donate it back to us using Gift Aid if you are a taxpayer.
Q. What checks are required to become a Volunteer?
To volunteer in one of our shops, we will ask for a personal reference. If you are based at Hospice in the Weald in Pembury we will carry out a DBS check. This is at no cost to you.
Q. Is there a minimum or maximum age to volunteer?
You must be 16 or over to volunteer at Hospice in the Weald. We are happy to welcome pupils on their Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme to help out in one of our shops. In this case volunteers can be aged 14. There is certainly no maximum age, our eldest volunteers are over 90 years old!
Q. I am having problems applying. Who do I contact for help?
Please contact Julia Cronin - Personnel Administrator, on 01892 820 500 ext 529 or firstname.lastname@example.org with any queries.
Q. Can I come for a visit before applying?
Yes! We would be delighted to meet with you and show you around the Hospice. Alternatively we could arrange for you to shadow one of our current volunteers to get a flavor of what volunteering is like. Please contact us to arrange a visit.
Q. I don't know which role would suit me. Can I talk to someone about the options?
Yes. Come in and meet us to discuss the different roles available - there is sure to be something that you would enjoy.
Q. What is the Volunteer Welcome Session?
We invite all new volunteers (except students) to one of our regular Staff and Volunteer Welcome Sessions. These are held every 6 weeks at the Hospice in Pembury. These sessions give a great overview of the Hospice as a whole - you will find out all about the different Services and departments. You will also meet other new volunteers and staff. While not compulsory we do encourage all new volunteers to attend as those who have been have told us that it is not only enjoyable but an invaluable source of information.
